Three essential traits to succeeding in real estate.

Have you ever wondered what the three most essential traits you need to succeed in real estate are, sticker around and I’ll tell you all of them.

————————————————-------------------------------

Over 30 years ago,  when I started it real estate,  I remember a discussion I had with my mentor at the time,  an older gentleman who was also at that time in the business over 30 years, today he’s in the business over 60 years and still going strong.

But I remember he would tell me what he would look for in a sales associate that would make them extremely successful and they are Desire, Motivation, and Drive.

I can remember thinking about that for a little while once he said it to me, and I wondered, do I have all three of those.

And after a very short time, I realize that I did.  Being a lot younger and very motivated and very driven and I knew I had the desire to succeed and do well. I knew I fell into that category.

I think the hardest thing for many people is to keep that same level of those three traits going every day of your life through your whole career.

It’s sometimes not as easy as you think. I do believe that a lot of what happens in our industry depends on your being able to adjust to change.   Because it is primarily a commission based business, your income is not gonna be exactly the same every month or every year.

But I like to say  “You will get out of it what do you put into it.”

The funny thing is, you cannot teach someone to have desire, drive or motivation. These are things they must have within themselves.

Over the years I’ve had many students who are being pushed by a parent or a spouse or a friend to do the real estate course and get their license.

Unfortunately the last thing in the world they wanted to do was that. It was just not something they were really passionate about.

Maybe they never stop to realize what a good quality of life it could give them and how they could have a career in real estate and still have time to pursue other interests that they were passionate about. Unfortunately the students who did not have any of these traits, didn’t even have enough interest to finish the course.

Over the years I have had many students who got their license, are succeeding in real estate, and were still able to pursue other passions.

I have had several actors, comedians and musicians on the verge of success or even in major motion pictures in some degree.

They found that having a career in real estate gave them the flexibility and schedule to be able to pursue their dream while still having a very healthy income.

I think it’s important to explore the industry of real estate before you get involved. You want to talk to people who have been in it for many years.

Keep in mind, people in any industry, depending on who you talk to, could give you a very different impression.

If you speak with unsuccessful people in real estate, and of course there are some, you’re not gonna get a very good feeling of  what could be there for you, and maybe be discouraged to even get into the industry.

But if you speak with successful like-minded people, you will then see how good it can be for you.

With a real estate career, there’s no reason to ever think or worry about retiring. Because you can work as light or hard as you want.

After a very short period of time you’ll be enjoying making great money and it won’t even feel like work.

Once you learn more about it and you realize that it is the career for you, you will quickly learn that you probably have those three traits you need to have to succeed.

Once you have your license, it is also important to continue surrounding yourself with successful people in the industry.

Whether you’re networking with mortgage professionals, insurance companies or title companies, you must make sure they have the same qualities and work ethics that you have.

Any weak link in your network could drag you down and prevent you from making money.

Being successful is contagious. When you see it around you and the lifestyle others have, you will strive for that as well.

Sometimes we need to work on removing bad traits we have,  to pursue the new ones that will help us succeed.

For instance on a personal level, I am always battling with procrastination. This does not stop me from doing what I want and need to do,  but at times it can make it tougher when you’re waiting for the last minute to do things.

Developing proper work habits and setting up solid routines will help you tremendously. These will make sure that you have the basic steps in place each day to do what you need to do to succeed on a regular basis.

And setting up a routine is different for everyone. You of course will need to find what works for you and then utilize it to the best of your ability.

And that is your five minute Monday !

Have a great day.
